57Lesbians In The Media: Progress??
I was so excited to see a commercial that targeted the Lesbian/Gay community. Until I began to pay closer attention. It was a commercial for KY Jelly. You know, the cheapest form of lubricant you could ever possibly use? I won't get into the specifics of how it responds to any degree of heavy sexual activity, but the commercial was targeting lesbians. Hooray!!
Yes, the video had two women claiming to be in a long term loving relationship looking to spicy up their sex life. Yes, the video was set in what one could only assume was their shared bedroom. Yes, the video even showed the two women sitting next to each other on the bed. The video even ends with the two women under the covers congratulating each other. Good start right?
Wrong.
Granted the scene is set in what we are supposed to assume is their bedroom, but it looks more like an IKEA catalogue. The women are obviously dressed for bed, in the most non-sexual, non-arousing attire, one even in a robe, see how intimate they are? The two women are very bland looking, sometimes even appearing bored or slightly afraid of each other. When sitting next to each other on the bed, their body language clearly portrays a non-sexual interest in each other, and the way they talk about attempting to enhance their sexual arousal, is so uninterested and lacks presence, They could have been discussing filing their taxes.
The "AHHHHHH" moment in the commercial when we are to assume the couple has somehow reached climax, it looks more like a hippie revival of the Manson Family Picnic than a double cloitis explosion. When you see them "snuggled" in bed together at the end of their rousing sexual tryst that has now been made more stimulating thanks to the KY Jelly, they both look sadly disappointed and maybe even a little embarazed.
If I was a lesbian who had never used KY Jelly before, just from the ad alone I'd stay away from it. Those women didn't look aroused, they looked suicidal from lack of dick!!
Don't get me wrong. On the one hand I love that we are beginning to generate media and advertising that is aimed at supporting or targeting the LGBTQ community in a positive way. It just saddens me that we have to be portrayed as dowdy, uninterested, non-sexual, non-aggressive, not too feminine but definitely not butch, non-threatening ways.
Taking the first step and admitting that gays have families and relationships is great. It really is a step in the right direction. But it's my belief that we need to be portrayed more accurately and more completely. We need to be seen as whole humans, with whole experiences that are trying just like everyone else, to live a whole life.
The world has far scarier things to fear than women being passionate and aggressive and sexual with each other.
Granted that most of the KY Jelly commercials in this series feature drab, bored couples of the Het variety as well, as seen in the 2nd video, but the distinction is hard to miss.
